Automated strike zone apps

“Automated strike zone” pulls up clickers, charting apps, pitch analytics, and million-dollar camera rigs. Only a handful actually call the zone in real time from a phone. Here is the landscape.

Safe placement for live at-bats

Among phone apps that track the zone, only HeyBLU is designed to sit in a safe area for game play. PitchLab and Ember need the camera behind the pitcher for release-side tracking — which puts a tripod (and often an operator) in the field of play during live at-bats.

PitchLab & Ember

Camera behind the pitcher. Fine for bullpens and pitch design — but for scrimmages or games, that mount is in play and in the way of ground balls, base runners, and fielders.

HeyBLU

Mounts in foul territory off to the side — outside the action, with a clear view of the plate and pitch path. On fields with a close enough backstop, the phone can sit on a fence mount behind the backstop. For live at-bats or deeper backstops, a tripod in foul territory is the usual setup; an L-screen or similar protector can shield the phone with minimal impact on the game.

HeyBLU:

A single iPhone by the backstop runs real-time 3D ball tracking and trajectory analysis to determine pitch location vs the strike zone and speaks Ball or Strike. Pitch data can be used for heatmaps, Command Training, and more.
