iOS 15+, rear camera; recommended: iPhone 11 or newer for best tracking quality.
For the most accurate, up-to-date guidance on setup and tracking, follow the step-by-step instructions shown inside the HeyBLU app.
How to scan
Tips to collect high-quality video for consistent tracking.
- Lighting: HeyBLU is currently built for outdoor, daytime use. Night games and indoor use may not work reliably yet and are still being improved.
- Mounting: Use a tripod or steady mount. Aim for roughly 10–20 feet away, as long as the plate and mound stay clearly visible.
- Orientation: For scanning and pitch tracking Landscape is required. Keep both home plate and the pitcher's mound fully visible in the frame.
- Settings: You don't need to change any camera settings on your iPhone. HeyBLU configures the camera automatically—just open the app and follow the prompts.
- Sample video: If tracking fails, record a short 10–20s clip showing the issue to attach to your report.
Always follow the in-app setup instructions. If anything here conflicts with the app, the in-app guidance is the source of truth.
Placing home plate (strike zone setup)
HeyBLU builds the strike zone from the position of home plate. The app will walk you through plate placement; use these guidelines as a quick reference.
- Make sure home plate is fully visible in the frame and not blocked. Best if the camera is within 2 feet of home plate facing it at a downward angle but not directly downward.
- When the app prompts you, follow the on-screen instructions to tap on home plate. Tap the exact center of home plate. Be as precise as you can.
- If the strike zone moves, the lighting changes a lot, or the pitches aren't being called accurately, re-run plate placement from inside the app.
- Use the in-app preview pitches to confirm the zone and pitch location calls look accurate before you start a live inning.
Troubleshooting — When it isn't tracking
Run this checklist in order — most issues are resolved in steps 1–4.
- Permissions — Confirm Camera, Microphone, and Motion sensors are allowed (Settings → HeyBLU).
- Lighting & background — Move to even light and reduce background clutter behind the plate.
- Framing — Ensure the plate is fully visible and the strike zone is correctly placed.
- Device health — Close background apps, free space, reboot, reinstall if necessary.
- Update — Make sure you're on the latest TestFlight build.
- Sample test — Try a known-good sample video. If that works, contrast with your setup to find the difference.
- Network — If cloud processing is required, ensure stable internet.
- Capture diagnostics — Record a 10–30s clip showing the issue and describe steps to reproduce (see Report a bug).
